Funding and Sponsorship

GPET proudly supports the following organisations to promote general practice training throughout Australia:

General Practice Registrars Australia (GPRA)

General Practice Registrars Australia represents the interests of GP registrars and supports them through the training program. GPET contracts with GPRA to develop key initiatives to promote general practice to medical students and junior doctors through strong peer-to-peer networks. The three key components of these initiatives are:

·         General Practice Students Network (GPSN)
·         First Wave Scholarship Program
·         Going Places Network
General Practice Students Network (GPSN)
Since its inception, GPSN has grown from strength to strength, with local clubs now established in all 20 Australian medical schools. GPSN runs local events that further students’ knowledge of general practice and enhance key clinical skills. To find out more about the GPSN club at your university, visit www.gpsn.org.au.
First Wave Scholarship program
The main objective of the GPSN First Wave Scholarship program is to provide early-year medical students with positive exposure to general practice, under the guidance of enthusiastic GPs, to encourage students to consider careers in general practice. There are two different First Wave experiences available to students – Clinical General Practice and Academic General Practice scholarships – in all 20 medical schools.
Going Places Network
Building on the success of GPSN, the Going Places Network replicates the GPSN peer-to-peer strategy within teaching hospitals. This junior doctor network allows members to explore the world of general practice whilst completing training and promotes general practice as a specialty of choice. The program is currently being rolled out nationally, with a focus on expanding the network of GP Ambassadors across teaching hospitals; hosting educational, social and networking events; and providing online resources and loads of useful information via the GP Australia website – www.gpaustralia.org.au.

Australian Medical Students Association (AMSA)

The Australian Medical Students Association is a dynamic organisation which connects, informs and represents over 14,000 medical students nationwide. Through its partnership with AMSA as a major sponsor, GPET maintains a visible presence early in our future doctors’ careers. From interacting with students at the annual AMSA National Convention and Global Health Conference, to promoting AGPT program in their various publications, the sponsorship ensures that general practice as a career choice is forefront in medical students’ minds.

Global Health Conference (GHC)
GPET is a major sponsor of the Global Health Conference, an annual event run by AMSA which brings together medical students from all over Australia and the Asia-Pacific region who are interested in global health issues. In 2011, GHC was held at the University of New South Wales in Sydney from 30 June - 3 July.
AMSA National Convention
The AMSA National Convention attracts over 1,000 medical students from Australia and New Zealand and is the academic and social highlight of the medical student calendar. GPET is a major sponsor of the AMSA National Convention - participating in the trade fair, sponsoring plenary sessions and workshops, and staging the AGPT and AMSA Video Competition in the lead up to Convention. This year's AMSA Convention was held at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre from 3-10 July.
AGPT and AMSA Video Competition
In 2010, AGPT and AMSA launched “Get Promoting General Practice”, a video competition which aims to engage medical students in the promotion of general practice as a career and to help break down barriers and stigma attached to the profession.

AMSA Pink Ribbon Breakfast
In 2011, GPET sponsored the AMSA Pink Ribbon Breakfast in support of the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Held on Thursday 7 July 2011 at the University of Sydney, the event featured speaker A/Prof Fran Boyle AM, oncologist and breast cancer researcher.

Australian Medical Association (AMA)

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) is the peak membership organisation representing the registered medical practitioners (doctors) and medical students of Australia. The AMA promotes and protects the professional interests of doctors and the health care needs of patients and communities.
Family Doctor Week
In 2011, GPET sponsored the AMA’s Family Doctor Week which runs from 18 -24 July. Family Doctor Week is a reminder to the community of the vital role played by local family doctors in keeping Australia healthy.
This year, AMA aims to reach a wider audience with its message of the importance of having a family doctor by launching a series of videos on YouTube featuring a diverse range of GPs. GPET is proud to partner with AMA with the production of these videos. To view these videos, please click HERE.
AMA National Conference: DIT Leadership Development Dinner
GPET sponsors the Doctors-in-Training Leadership Development Dinner at the annual AMA National Conference held in May of each year. All doctors-in-training and medical students are invited to attend the dinner.

Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP)

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) is a professional general practice organisation with over 17,000 members across Australia.

GPET is a program stream sponsor of RACGP’s annual conference, GP11 – a conference which brings general practitioners an opportunity to refine current skills, learn new skills and provides a great opportunity to share and learn with past and new colleagues. This year’s GP11 will be held in Hobart from 6-8 October 2011.

Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM)

The Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) sets the standards for educating and training medical Fellowship candidates (registrars) and for the ongoing professional development of rural and remote general practitioners.

ACRRM, together with Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA) hosts Rural Medicine Australia RMA, an annual conference that gives rural doctors an opportunity to gain or upgrade vital skills, exchange practice knowledge, and compare notes on the evolving nature of the medical profession. In 2011, GPET is a Silver Sponsor to RMA, which will be held in Alice Springs from 28-30 October.

Prevocational Medical Education Forum

The Prevocational Medical Education Forum brings together a wide spectrum of participants and delegates including local and international speakers and professionals committed to medical education. The Forum is organised under the auspices of the Confederation of Postgraduate Medical Education Councils (CPMEC) and aligned professional bodies.

Every year, GPET attends the Forum as an exhibitor to promote general practice training. This year, the Forum will be held in Auckland from 6-9 November.
