Referees

1. Can I use referees from overseas?

Yes you can. We do accept referees outside of Australia. However, overseas referees are required to provide evidence that they are in fact a registered medical practitioner in their own country with an English translation if required.  Referee reports must be completed in English and overseas referees must be contactable by telephone for audit purposes.

2. Who can be my referee?

Ideally a referee should be a medical practitioner who has supervised you for at least a period of 10 weeks within the past three years. You will need to select referees who are able to confidently make judgments about your professional capabilities and suitability for general practice (please note: registrars are also suitable as referees as long as they meet the criteria listed above). Applicants who are unable to nominate referees who meet the above criteria should contact the AGPT Selection team on (02) 6263 6776 to discuss their particular circumstance.

3. How do referees receive the referee reports?

When an applicant submits their application online, they will be required to enter the information of their two nominated referees including an active email address for each. On submission of their application, an email will be automatically generated and sent to the two nominated referees with instructions on how to either complete the referee report online or download a copy of the form for printing, manual completion and submission.

4. Do I need to ask my referees to provide a written letter?

No, referees are required to complete a structured report that ensures uniformity across the pool of applicants.

5. Who is responsible for making sure that my referees have submitted their reports on my behalf by the due date?

It is your responsibility to make sure that GPET receives the completed referee reports by the due date. GPET will not contact referees on your behalf to urge them to send in their reports.
