AGPT Selection Process 2011

Introduction

Selection into the AGPT program is a merit-based, competitive and multi-phased process used to determine which applicants are best suited to general practice. It is carried out in accordance with the Australian Medical Council’s principles for selection into specialist training programs against nationally consistent criteria. The competency based selection process allows applicants to demonstrate their abilities and suitability for entry into AGPT.

The selection process consists of four key steps: applying for AGPT; undergoing an eligibility determination; undergoing a suitability assessment and allocation processes; and, if eligible and suitable, obtaining a training placement with a regional training provider.

Suitability Assessment and Merit Ranking: AGPT Selection Centres

There is a revised selection process applying to applicants who nominate the following regional training providers as a first and/or second preference:

o Bogong Regional Training Network (Bogong)
o Victorian Metropolitan Alliance (VMA)
o CoastCityCountry Training Ltd (CCC)
o Greater Green Triangle GP Education and Training (Greater Green)
o Beyond Medical Education (Beyond ME)
o Gippsland Education and Training for General Practice Ltd (getGP)

Applicants nominating the above regional training providers as first or second preference will be invited to attend an AGPT Selection Centre to be held in either Melbourne on 3 or 10 July 2010 or in Sydney on 2 or 3 July 2010.   Attendance at a Centre is mandatory for applicants wishing to train wtih these providers.

Applicants will be able to nominate a preferred location, date and time to attend an AGPT Selection Centre once they have submitted an online application. However, attendance cannot be confirmed until the relevant documentation has been received by GPET and the applicant’s eligibility status has been confirmed.

GPET strongly recommends that applicants attending an AGPT Selection Centre complete their application as early as practicable during the period the online application form is available and follow up promptly in sending your supporting documentation to GPET. This will help ensure you obtain your preferred date and time.

In Melbourne the AGPT Selection Centres will be held at the Royal Women’s Hospital in Parkville with sessions expected to commence at approximately 9:00 am; 10:45 am; 11:30 am and 12:30 pm. Start times will be verified on confirmation of attendance numbers. Applicants are required to attend one session on either Saturday 3 July 2010 or Saturday 10 July 2010 and should allow approximately four hours attendance time.

In Sydney the AGPT Selection Centres will be held at the University of Sydney in Camperdown with sessions expected to commence at approximately 9:00 am; 10:30 am 11:30 am and 12:30 pm. Start times will be verified on confirmation of attendance numbers. Applicants are required to attend one session on either Friday 2 July 2010 or Saturday 3 July 2010 and should allow approximately four hours attendance time.

The AGPT Selection Centre will consist of six Multi Mini Interviews (MMIs) and a 50-question Situational Judgment Test (SJT). The results from the AGPT Selection Centre and the score of the structured referee reports supplied will form the basis of a competitive, merit-based applicant allocation to regional training providers. Information about AGPT Selection Centres is available here.  A brief presentation is available here.  For an overview of the processes involved click here.

Applications will be accepted between 9.00 am AEST 14 May 2010 and 9.00am AEST 16 June 2010 via the online application portal.  Information about how to apply and how your eligibility for application will be assessed in available on the New Applicants webpage.

Important information for applicants who may want to select both an RTP using Selection Centres and another RTP as preferences.

It is possible for an applicant to select a both types of regional training provider as first or second preference (for example Victorian Metropolitan Alliance or similar as first preference and Wentwest or similar as second preference) as all eligible applicants will be able to have a non AGPT Selection Centre ranking band calculated. However it important to note that only applicants who have attended an AGPT Selection Centre will be eligible for allocation to a regional training provider who is using Selection Centres.

Applications will be accepted between 9.00 am AEST 14 May 2010 and 9.00am AEST 16 June 2010 via the online application portal.  Information about how to apply and how your eligibility for application will be assessed in available on the New Applicants webpage.
